July 1, 2020 — Steadfast in its readiness for School Year 2020-2021, the Department of Education (DepEd) will include Self-Learning Modules (SLMs) with the alternative learning delivery modalities to be provided for different types of learners across the Philippines.
The incorporation of SLMs with the alternative learning delivery modalities (modular, television-based, radio-based teaching, mixed, and online) would help DepEd ensure that all learners have access to quality basic education for SY 2020-2021 with face-to-face classes still prohibited due to the public health situation.
“To address the needs, situations and resources of each and every learner, the SLMs and other alternative learning delivery modalities are in place and will cover all the bases to ensure that basic education will be accessible in the midst of the current crisis posed by COVID-19,” said DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones.
SLMs are provided to schools located in coastal regions, far-flung provinces, and communities without access to the internet or electricity in printed format. The Department has announced for households with gadgets and tablets that SLMs can also be accessed online or offline.
Secretary Briones noted that SLMs will be incorporated into video lessons, especially for students from K to 3 who need more auditory learning than other levels of grade.
Dr. Estela Carino, Director of DepEd Region II, added that learners with special needs would have video sessions as well as designated teachers who will guide them during their classes, with inclusivity in mind.
The exercises we have put into the SLMs would also be ideal for learners with special needs. We also need to give the same kind of treatment to these learners that we gave them when we were doing face-to-face lessons. Most of them will, apart from the modules, use video-taped lessons, RD Carino said.
The Department also guaranteed that as SLMs can be completed at home, the safety and health of teachers and workers will be its highest priority. The present job arrangements and health protocols must be observed by teachers who will need to visit their schools to get supplies to prepare the SLMs.
In order to further align the SLMs with the modalities of learning delivery, DepEd is set to finalize the modalities of learning delivery that will be introduced for each area after the June enrollment consolidation of Learner Enrollment and Survey Forms (LESF).
NOTE: SELLING OF MODULES IS PUNISHABLE BY LAW.
